About Marc Mercier
MARC'S MUSIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Marc commenced musical learning as a child and achieved the level of grade 8 within a period of 3 years. He attended the Queensland Conservatorium of Music under a scholarship during secondary schooling (studying there with Regis Danillon) and commenced teaching the piano in 1990 whilst still in secondary school. He later attained the qualification of Licentiate in Music (LTCL) and Fellowship in Music (FTCL) through Trinity College, London.
Following completion of secondary schooling (a period in which Marc also undertook private piano studies with Jill Viner), Marc attended the University of Queensland where he commenced piano performance studies (Bachelor of Music in piano performance) with Bevan Crabtree in the Music Faculty, Enid Tardent and Eileen Logan (privately), whilst simultaneously undertaking a Bachelor's degree in Science majoring in Anatomy/Physiology and Forensics.
Whilst Marc undertook a Bachelor degree in Laws following the completion of the Science degree, he continued to overlap the completion of a Bachelor degree in Music at the University of Queensland. Marc also completed with honours a Master of Laws degree majoring in litigation and dispute resolution and later went on to become a Barrister-at-Law, qualified mediator and, for a time, a Crown Prosecutor, and the Principal Conciliator for Queensland at the Anti-Discrimination Commission. Marc also currently practises as a Barrister-at-Law and Mediator and operates a busy Body Corporate Management Company and property development consultancy practice. In harnessing his professional knowledge, Marc has also written the only Body Corporate textbook for legal practitioners in Queensland entitled "Body Corporate Law: Practice and Procedure" as published by the international legal publisher, Wolters Kluwer CCH.
During his tertiary studies (and thereafter), Marc continued to perform in solo recitals at City Hall, the University of Queensland, Queensland Conservatorium of Music, QPAC and other venues. In particular, Marc has performed as a soloist in many recitals, including some notable concerts featuring Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 3, Bach's Piano Concerto in d minor, Haydn Concerto in D, Grieg's Piano Concerto in a minor, Mozart's Concertos Nos 20/21/24/26 (& Concerto K365 for 2 pianos), and Brahms' Concerto No 1. Other recitals include the performances of the mighty Sonata in b minor by Franz Liszt and Ginastera's Piano Sonata, as well as a large selection of Beethoven and Mozart Piano Sonatas. Marc has also performed widely in chamber music recitals featuring Brahms' Piano Quartet No.1, Cello Sonata No 1 and Violin Sonata No 1, Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Nos 3 and 5, Rachmaninov's Suite No 2 (for 2 pianos), lieder, and many other ensemble works.
Marc's extensive repertoire includes major works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Ginastera, Haydn, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Scarlatti, Scriabin, Schubert, Schumann and Weber.
It is the varied and high level of education and practice in music that Marc brings to bear in lessons, which are provided to a select group of piano students owing to the limited time available. Marc teaches traditional methods together with the Suzuki techniques, with a strong emphasis on the development of pianistic technique, musicality, and assisting students to achieve and exceed examination benchmarks, particularly those provided by the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and Trinity College, London. Marc also simultaneously teaches Theory of Music (AMEB curriculum) as part of a mandatory stand in the undertaking of piano lessons.
